A newcomer test

posted in environment |

Turns out that there is a test for newcomers: ask them to correctly sort their trash with a minimum of rebagging. We’ve read the brochure, asked advice at the hardware store, considered the logical implications of mixing a cereal carton with a newspaper… and we’re probably going to have to hire a tutor. Or a sorter.

My morning saw me heading off to get a water test completed. For $136, I should be able to discuss the bacterial contaminants or the nitrate solvency with assurance. As a plus, the water will still taste like water.

Of course, a little concentration might be a good thing; I arrived at the cashier with a cellphone and no wallet. Confused by the weight in my pocket. No other option but to do an additional round trip. With solvency restored, I then ordered three doors with delivery, and they arrived this afternoon while I was outside trying to vent my frustrations on a dryer hose.

Big day. The washer, dryer and dishwasher are now all able to add their voices to the household cantata. Just in time, as my wardrobe was in dire need of renewal. The truck can’t get here soon enough.

Discovered an access panel in the back yard. Asked the contractor for a hint. Turns out that the septic field is nowhere near where I thought it might be. Which now means I have to find out why the “other acre” was excavated, and where a reasonable amount of soil might now be found. I’m not great with estimation of odd sized mounds, but the whole field looks… lowered. Like a bad haircut.
