Equilibrium

posted in environment |

I received my wakeup call sometime before sunrise; seems that my stomach was “too noisy”, and I was asked to go elsewhere. Which actually turned out to be a good thing, as I was fully awake when the doorbell rang. Nothing about noise. Rather, two men on a mission: to pack my kitchen away for travel.

They were good. What would have taken me two days, they had boxed and taped inside of two hours. Followed by the various mirrors, and fragile paintings, and the contents of our clothes closets. Only one small error noted, when I went for my car keys and found that the attached coat had been crated. No matter, tape can be cut. We cut it three more times during the day.

The house is now in a state of equilibrium, where the number of items to be boxed has given way to the number of boxes. A labyrinth, with none of the charm of those found in an English country garden. These are anonymous, brown cardboard boxes. The only label is if I give it one. My own taste is for cryptic.

Doors, for locks. Food for the contents of the pantry. Lamps for anything that might be repurposed with a bulb. And so on. The next game will be trying to find in what order we need to cut the cartons open, once delivered.

It’s close: the driver of the transport truck called to confirm our address, and schedule us for tomorrow morning. With that settled, the early evening was repurposed, to saying goodbye to neighbours and progeny. Tomorrow, we’re either camping on the carpet, or traveling to points east.
