Making a list

Worm, beware! The robin is afoot! Spotted my first red predator this morning, although I may have heard one last evening. In any case, that’s the sign that spring is also afoot. Better to trust nature than something as constructed as a calendar.

Shift a few cartons

Once the bread was started, the only logical thing to do was put on my shoes. Which, of course, left the dog bewildered. Why was I going to the basement, without his leash? Keep wondering, puppy. Life will have many questions for all of us over the next few weeks.

Seeing my world on a daily basis

Here I am, seated before the keyboard, hoping for fifteen minutes of inspiration. The walk with the dog, under a light drizzle, brought little. Other than, and just because it caught my attention, almost all of the temporary garage units in the neighbourhood have been hidden away for another couple of seasons. I think there might be a bylaw to push homeowners into activity.

Sequestered, on a tiny island

Brought the loaner dog home for the evening. She was shorn, in the last day or two, and I detect a change. Not as assertive, without her winter curls. I wonder if dogs have that sense of self-image? I mean, they see themselves as completely matched against the largest and the smallest examples of their species, but the simple act of removing fur seems to bring an uneasy calm into the house. Our main dog is already both short of hair and short on nerve, so I can’t test this easily.

The continual tow

All it required was for me to extract a clean pair of socks from the drawer, and the dog went into overdrive. Race upstairs. Bound on and off (and on) the bed, with the same sense of anticipation I’d noted on other evenings. This “go for a long walk” behavior seems to suit him. Me; not as much. I’m aching from the continual tow (although that might be my fault).

Cinematic ties

There are important cultural ties between here and the Motherland; Britain. And the best place to see the similarities is in cinema. We can’t avoid it, actually. Too many outlets that tie to my TV.

All politics is local (sic)

One of the catch phrases offered to excuse the efforts of our elected officials is “All politics is local” (sic). I’m like to add to that a rider: “and my neighbour is an idiot”. Seriously. Sadly. How else to get through the day, when at every turn we learn that the representative class does not do so.

New shoes day

Today was “new shoes” day. Not for the humans, or the dog; this time around, the car got the nod. Not cheap, either. In fact, a round of tires, which seem to have a useful span of about three years in seasonal mode, cost more than all the other family footwear, combined.

Stretches of lawn

Breaking with tradition, I opted for a traditional breakfast this morning. Classic scrambled eggs with ham pieces; good to the last bite.  The dog, who doesn’t appreciate how tasty an egg can be, watched sleepily. He won’t share his couch, but my food is usually much higher on his priority scale. Paw swatting higher.

On tour and marking the way

The moment would have been well served by a candid snapshot: a joyous, bewildered dog. He saw me, and the beloved leather leash appear in the doorway. A dog can be dumbfounded. I don’t often accompany him on his nocturnal tour, where he leaves behind more than he receives, so he had to guess what I wanted.
