Recyclable constraints

Part of the new city plan is to increase the quantity of material going to the blue box patrol, with a decrease in our burn and bury. Good plan. One small bit of fine-tuning is needed, though.

Collateral damage

We’re still not into winter, but this morning left one of those icy layers that makes walking more of a sport than anything else. I arrived at my usual bus stop without any corporal injuries; a slight twist to the lower back is just a detail at this time of year.

When appearances are skin deep

Recently, a “before and after” story came across my desktop, where certain celebrities were shown in photos that were either very flattering, or not at all. Cherrypicking, certainly. Eyeopening… well, the cosmetics industry has been in on the secret for ages. Just ask Cleopatra. But how about software?

Four hundred before the 400th

Hurrah! The calendar of events for the Quebec 2008 blowout has been made public. Great slogan for today: 400 before the 400th. Tomorrow is another day. Groups of people at strategic corners throughout the city, distributing copies of “Le Soleil” (I gave at home, thanks.) Jewel cases for the next level of client.

Another slow news day

Good thing that I am not a news editor at a top level Canadian daily. It must be really difficult to fill all that white space around the ads on certain days. Like today. A report that certain neigbourhoods in Charlottetown have been invaded by crows, and the city council is searching for a solution.

Santa shouldn’t wear gloves

Now that Black Friday has passed, and the full Christmas shopping season is upon us, it’s time for the visits with the store Santa. Our kids are past that happy point in all our lives, but the willing victim today was the dog. Sometimes, things just don’t follow the script.

Routine

Another week over at work, and the bus arrives right on schedule. Home inside of an hour, prepare supper for those that want it (or happen to be present). Settle down to spend an ordinary evening around the house, with an “early to bed” to bookend the “early to rise”. Routine.

Suitably certifiable

There are processes within the business world that leave me mystified. Last week, our director was asked if we could allow a community group to use our videoconference centre. The room was available, so why not. I received a number of “heads up” calls to make sure I was on board and ready to receive our visitors. Nothing could be easier.

The dance has ended

Late in the summer of 1972, I swung down from the Ocean Limited in Amherst, and collected my trusty Targa bicycle from the baggage car. With a fair portion of my worldly belongings in a huge green knapsack (still in the basement), I mounted my trusty steed and set off for the Island. With sixty kilometers of road and the wind at my back, it was time to turn on my transistor radio and tune in CFCY.

Keeping things in perspective

Nothing wrong with a hobby or twenty, right? We have to fill up those periods when we aren’t fulfilling the requirements of somebody else. Recreation, as in recess. Taking a moment to do something we like to do. Right now, I’m one of millions of bloggers – kind of like joining the track and field team except that you don’t have to run around in circles, or jump, or throw old spears.
