The van is nearly packed. The roof container has been strapped into place and shook to see if it falls off. The tents and sleeping bags have been stuffed into their respective sacks, in an imitation of sausage-making. The stove is clean and the fuel is ready. Our portable kitchen has been washed and sorted and made ready for whatever number of meals we finally decide to prepare ourselves.

CBC aired the first part of a documentary this evening, hosted by Dr. David Suzuki. I don’t often include citations, but this excerpt from the corporate site is a true precis:

I went clothes shopping with my son today. It took a great deal of suggesting and hinting to get him out the door, but the need was pressing… how many hours a day can one wear pyjamas without going to bed?

There we go, another episode of “America’s Got Talent”. Entertaining, but I still don’t quite understand. Oh wait, neither do they. Another variation on the rules was announced tonight! I’m under pressure to divest. Not diversify; divest. I have dropped the hunter role of my ancestral forebears and become a gatherer, a harvester. I have filled the barns (read, basement) to a point of “get rid of the junk.”

I set out to replace our good flashlight this afternoon (the stalwart MagLite has gone “missing in action” to my chagrin) but my departure was late enough that all the box stores had just closed. Mañana.
