Heavy weather

There’s a meal we haven’t had in a long time: pulled pork sandwiches. Much better than I remembered.

Watching an approaching storm, physically and politically

Four years ago, I ordered a nifty little gadget from a web site. I don’t use it often, but when I do, it does what I want. Specifically, clone one hard drive to another. Granted, not as practical as a screw driver, but if you’ve ever tried to stream “the bits” from one storage unit to another… Cloning a new SSD drive for the netbook took about an hour, but I now have a light, more rapid laptop for any eventual travel.

A model map

Either the needle was very thin, or my dog has thick skin. He took us along for moral support, this afternoon, while receiving booster shots from the veterinarian. Not a whimper! We were in and out in a matter of minutes, and he’s now off to explore the nearest beach.

Wet feet

Call it a change in routine: sometime after morning coffee, the rainfall began. Here we are, about ten hours along and so far we’ve received 54 mm. About double the amount from the last month! Not going to start an ark project, but wanted to make sure I paid attention to the “end of a long, hot summer”. They’ve postponed the Gold Cup race, and a number of streets in the city require your Wellingtons.

Trivia doesn’t work in large crowds

Over the last few years, my nod to social activity has included irregular rounds of trivial pursuit. I’ve figured out that some team sizes are optimal. Others (like tonight) lead to hours of confusion and repetition. We were close to a dozen, seated around a banquet hall table among other oversize collections of players. Elsewhere, the largest attendance ever. The volume level turned everything into a challenge match; trying to communicate an idea without shouting was the challenge. Yes, you can be of great assistance to others, even inadvertently.

Wetter than before

Keeping with the idea that the most important news stories are local, it rained today. Not a lot (19mm) but it came with fury, shock and awe. This evening, there will be no reason to run the sprinkler, and although an all-time record was set, this morning, we can go back to believing in clement climate. For those who need to know, we managed to surpass the number of consecutive days with a humidex of 30C or higher. Happy?

On the cusp of a record stretch

Oh look, another ration of daylight coming to an end. I have that “indoor lighting” equipment that equalizes the force field. Best get ready to throw the switches and settle down for the dark time.

Tracking the traces

With the end of another month just hours away (and not a cloud of consequence in the sky), I’m going to extract some climate data. For here. No trend implied, just fun to know that it has been as warm and dry as observed by people here in the house.

Involuntary blood donations

For a number of reasons, I’ve gone through life without donating blood. I wish that the local mosquitoes would get the memo. Putting away the grill with its cover is an open invitation to feed the multitude. Unfair advantage to their team. When the wind is up, no big deal. However, that lull at the supper hour is more than enough for me to learn new dance steps.

Frozen solid

Home cooking explained in one phrase: “Why does fried fish taste so good and smell so bad?”

Life is filled with such mysteries. Why does the dog need to check the front yard at three in the morning? Why don’t I have the same sense of responsibility? And what about the birds? They’re here early and they stay late. Speaking of the birds, I was gobsmacked at the photo of a local hummingbird feeder, frozen solid. This morning. Did I open the calendar to the wrong sheet?
