It’s already been six months. A phrase that fits many situations, but here in Quebec it means that the season “not winter” is over. Six months ago, I changed the four season tires onto the van and got ready for all that means around here. New leaves. Grass. A short vacation.

I suppose that there are places where the climate is so uniform, so predictable that nobody cares what tomorrow will bring. Not here. Not in Canada.

The predicted happened. A space ship crashed on the moon, and my eyes were elsewhere. We had close family in for a visit, and I just didn’t remember to go outside and stare upwards at the right moment. Didn’t even cross my mind.

Given the ambivalent state of the weather, and my need to improve our lighting supplies, we returned to the camper stores today. Two of them, this time, since our curiosity assured that once we’d parked in the shoebox lot at Latulippe (one of three lots) the store across the street was fair game.

Oh the glorious signs of summer. Freshly overgrown grass. Pools that need constant care. Offices that are understaffed (or sufficiently staffed, as it may be). Tents.

Oh no, the weather channel has its red screens out. Oh no, the government weather site has its red and yellow warning bars out again. The first hot day of the season has its scary thunder clouds all around us, with an imminent risk of rain, or wind, or hail, or shock and awe effects.

Today is a windy one. Brings back a certain memory of going outside to check the treetops, in an attempt to judge the wind strength in case we were going to sea (back three decades ago, in a chapter of my life where I fished). When the trees hit a certain degree of sway, we would make the decision not to go out on the bounding main.

The big spring ritual of changing the tires is done. As usual, the team at the local tire store has me in and out in twenty minutes, and this might be the only company in town that remembers my name, based on a twice yearly visit. Go figure.

The snow is almost gone. Our lawn doesn’t resemble ground zero, exactly; I’d be willing to grade it as plus one, but the residue of two successive dogs, industrial snowblowers and the other assorted junk has left an appearance that the House And Gardens photo team will probably want to avoid. Still, a quiet optimism is felt in our neighbourhood. Fewer episodes of lawn shovelling this year (does this mean that my good example is bearing fruit?) The companies that spray chemical soup seem to be through with the supper-hour calls – guess their work term is finally here. I saw the lawn mower hiding out back. This is all good.
