Smokey waters

posted in Wx |

We’re in the middle of a lovely spring, full of new life; signs of germination and fertility are everywhere. Unfortunately, our noses bear witness, as the springtime pollen counts are very high in this region.

Worse, the pool is slowly taking on a green-yellow cast; not from the usual algal problem, but from an accumulated layer of pollen. I don’t remember seeing the effect this clearly at any time in the previous decade.

Forest fire season is also starting; the faint odour of woodsmoke is reminiscent of a cold evening in mid-winter, but the pall of smoke isn’t heavy yet. Lot of forest around here… I’ve never seen evidence here in the city area, but last spring one of our schools up North had to be evacuated. With six weeks to go before summer, the risk will remain high, especially with a long-range forecast of hot and dry in place.

Spring, glorious spring!
