Random deliveries
Today is a windy one. Brings back a certain memory of going outside to check the treetops, in an attempt to judge the wind strength in case we were going to sea (back three decades ago, in a chapter of my life where I fished). When the trees hit a certain degree of sway, we would make the decision not to go out on the bounding main.
Things have changed for me. Now I catch my bus even when the wind blows. I put the recycling bin out even when there’s a chance that the volume will have diminished by the time the truck rolls into our street. But, as someone else’s newspaper led me down the avenue, page by page, I could only wonder who would receive this random delivery. Would that person be disappointed to find that the paper was late? Would they mind that the page order was random, and that certain sections could only be found on someone else’s lawn? Would the recycled newsprint go to an immediate sort of composting, should the forecast rain showers begin? Would that same paper “return to sender”, when the wind backed to another direction? Worse, was this an edition that missed the step before recycling; would some person wonder if anything happened yesterday since their copy was lost in delivery?
