When a front rolls by

Observing weather is an exercise in mathematics. Sure, most of us know that “it” is colder or warmer than at a previous point in time. We also recognize when rain falls. How about if we use a graphic to make the correlation clearer. This is data from this afternoon, just outside my kitchen.

Broken sensors

Please, don’t look to the government for financial largesse – at least not at the level of the “little people”. Today, changes to the program for parental leave were announced. You can now draw benefits for an additional. Wait, let me use their terminology:

Additional training required

I don’t always “get” our weather guy jokes; this evening, he said that if the precipitation over the next few days seems to be white in colour… must be an upper Canada thing.

Locked the door

I’ve locked the back door. Consider this to be risk reduction, after that red sky this morning,  According to the weather people, there’s a bomb headed in this direction… a little to the west, but still. Can’t be too careful, right?

Tracking that slow boat from China

The temperature peaked at 22.4C, this afternoon. I’m under an obligation to note such things. As well, there are tomatoes growing on the vines in the garden bed, and I have more than my share of houseflies, clustered on the ceiling. That’s another story, without a proper ending (yet). My swatter can only get a few, each time, before the others swarm indecisively.

Turned over the symbolic stirring rod to another

Over the years, I’ve made a fair number of pots of chili. Large pots; approaching industrial volumes (which didn’t make much sense, given that my kids were averse to beans in their bowls). Still, I persisted. Opened a lot of cans along the way, because in the city, that’s where you got your veggies.

Hottest day in ages

For me, there is great satisfaction in knowing about my local weather. I want to go beyond “Nice day, eh!”. Quantification, where possible. Take today, as a small example:

Watched the boat come in

Today, I watched the boat come in. Not “my boat” exactly, but close enough. And I was close enough; could have hit it with a snowball, in a different season. Seen between two wharf walls, they move a lot of water around with the effort to slow and tie up.

When I water the peppers

Thanks to a gas-up from the night before, my list of things to do before departure were limited to getting in the car. I’m not going anywhere, actually, but I had to meet the boat before it left; with the assistance of Google directions and a noted lack of construction delays, we arrived on time. The ferry looks much larger when you’re right alongside…

When every basement is wet

Around here, we eat meals. Pretty much every day. Most are eaten because we’re hungry, but the occasional one also serves to mark an occasion. Celebrating birthdays is a good example. This evening, we put some time and effort into things and drove all the way to the city. The curry was worth the trip.
