Hottest day in ages

posted in politics, Wx |

For me, there is great satisfaction in knowing about my local weather. I want to go beyond “Nice day, eh!”. Quantification, where possible. Take today, as a small example:

29.1 C on Sept 26th 2017.

  • Hottest day this month.
  • Hottest day this summer.
  • Hottest day in the last calendar year.
  • Hottest day in the last two calendar years.

Almost the end of September. Think about that. I’ll check the wind speed on another day. When it is windy…

Nevertheless, there are other things going on in the world (elsewhere). We might get a replacement for NAFTA. To be fair, I have no idea what that will mean to my budget, but the press seems to think of trade as a “driving force”. I don’t trade…

And sports… did you know that “failure to respect the national anthem” is a hot topic right now? OK, not the Canadian anthem; we’re still left trying to decide what the lyrics and language of choice might be. But for others? All the cable news pundits can talk about since last week.

In other news, Saudi Arabia has legalized driving cars by women. Note that women have been driving, but the “legal” parameter is big. Won’t happen immediately – the country has until next summer to work out the actual mechanics of the change. I mean, besides the mechanics of getting behind the wheel. How confusing.

Meanwhile, Uber is out in London (UK) and will soon be just a memory in Quebec (the province, not just the city). I’ve never hailed a ride (although hitch hiking is similar, except for the requirement to pay my own way).
