The people at National Geographic saved me from a lot of personal effort in a recent article. Imagine, if I had been required to purchase a bell, hang that around the neck of a house cat and then take the time to follow the beast. Wouldn’t happen. Instead, over nine hundred cats were equipped with GPS trackers. And then, in a feat of scientific discovery, the cats were allowed to wander while their explorations were recorded.

It’s not just a rumour; I can be amazed by simple things. Just now, I watched the combination of some olive oil and some vinegar, when combined with various extracts from other plants, miraculously transform into “salad dressing”. Now, every time I see one of those odd-shaped containers in a supermarket, I’m going to wonder about the ingredients. Are they, too, just a way to have us eat oil and vinegar in an expensive wrapping? I asked someone else, here, and it appears to be so.

It’s easy to get out of phase with the world around me. This morning, I didn’t realize that the schools had closed due to snowfall. I did realize that the big blue tractor was outside, moving snow from here to there; I simply assumed we were dealing with our own, personal bounty. And then, the sun came out. Gloriously.

My morning meal, at home, follows a routine. The local market bakes cinnamon rolls. Great by themselves, or with fresh coffee. Nothing else required, or wanted. While on the road, I swing to the other extreme. Cornucopia.

Today, there was a breakfast, followed by shopping and ticket selling and topped off with a big parade. I missed all of it. Never let any dog in my house tell you that I’m not a devoted caregiver.

On my social media feed, a simple photograph. Tones of grey, with that odd scalloped border that Agfa and Kodak used with snapshot paper back when pictures went from wet to dry, rather than on the computer screen to on the computer screen. Yes, this photo had been digitized, but a lifetime after the fact.

As I continue my studies in a foreign language, I’ve noticed something. Improved comprehension. Not me; that’s for another day, but the dog. He seems to understand things better than at any previous time.

Blame it on geography. Getting from “here” to “there” means taking routes that others have set out, if you are dependent on a vehicle. Living on one coast limits the possible roads you can take to wherever. Travel more than once and you may end up passing through familiar territory.

Our dog is a member of a gang. I know, the traditional term is “pack” but this is too small to really apply such a label. He has three or four close companions, and the group tries to go for walks together on a local beach. As often as possible (because I could sense that would be your next question).
