Slightly out of sync
It’s easy to get out of phase with the world around me. This morning, I didn’t realize that the schools had closed due to snowfall. I did realize that the big blue tractor was outside, moving snow from here to there; I simply assumed we were dealing with our own, personal bounty. And then, the sun came out. Gloriously.
Now, this image doesn’t do justice to the local colours. Sorry. I am fascinated with the juxtaposition of a pasture under cover, next to open water. Look at the calendar; mid-winter is coming, but the ships still sail without need for a fleet icebreaker. It wasn’t like that, a generation ago. Winter stopped the maritime traffic, and I had first-hand experience, that year when I went into isolation and had to get all my groceries into the house before Christmas, because trying to get provisions by airplane would have been beyond my budget once the ice set in.
In eleven weeks, the boats will all be launched, and the annual trap sinking season will be upon us.
For now, I live in a home where skis and snowshoes (multiple pairs) are the chief interest. Not mine, but important enough to require all the storage space in our (tiny) car. The dog was caged by crossed poles, only days ago, although that was due in part to his own inability to imagine going over/under/around the obstacle. This is the same dog that can get held back by a snow lump near the front porch, so it is normal. For him.
