Cats and cakes

posted in food, pets |

The people at National Geographic saved me from a lot of personal effort in a recent article. Imagine, if I had been required to purchase a bell, hang that around the neck of a house cat and then take the time to follow the beast. Wouldn’t happen. Instead, over nine hundred cats were equipped with GPS trackers. And then, in a feat of scientific discovery, the cats were allowed to wander while their explorations were recorded.

Turns out, the cats did not stray far from the family couch. I guess with no predators, they felt secure doing whatever a cat wants to (killing birds?). And that is how science makes our lives better.

Meanwhile, I also watched my favourite group of young Irish performers (from the .Facts/Try channel family) take on a uniquely Canadian food: Vachon cakes. Now we’re in familiar territory. I have, over the years, had the great fortune to try almost every product. All are good, but some are better than good.

So, here we go. Vachon is a regional firm, with roots in the Beauce. Their line of cakes, chocolate coated or otherwise, have been a staple in certain Canadian lunchpails for almost a century. Someone took the time to forward several boxes of the product line to the show producers, and then the gang got to sample the wares. I’m  going to skip to the conclusion; they were impressed, and a little jealous of our good fortune. Twinkies are not in the same quality margin, at all. You’ll have to do your own tests, but I think you will agree that this was a win/win situation for the bakery and the invited testers.
