A show of comprehension

posted in education, pets |

As I continue my studies in a foreign language, I’ve noticed something. Improved comprehension. Not me; that’s for another day, but the dog. He seems to understand things better than at any previous time.

The vocabulary is limited, to be sure, but he seems to “get it”. When I say “Go to the door and sit”, he goes to the door AND he sits. When I tell him to stop hiding chewy toys in the bedroom closet, he… OK, we’re still working on that. But the “sit” bit; he’s got it. So much easier to find him, when I have to grab the collar for the “attach and release” game we play by an open door. Preparation for the chill winds ahead.

But I’m sure your curiosity is piqued, as to MY language skills. Well, I still don’t understand dog-talk, but it’s a matter of time. I have to guess where he’s taking the conversation. Yes, I’m sure it involves cheese and other foodstuffs, but that’s because I’m a learner. When I achieve mastery, all will be clear.

And that other study set? I’m fast approaching completion of all the available lessons in my program. Somewhere in the next week, I’ll have covered all five levels of everything, and my virtual trophy, my “corn”, will be presented. I don’t know by whom, or with what ceremony, yet. The “consecutive day count” is approaching 1000, and I’m pumped. I change my virtual owl clothes regularly, and I have added a few virtual jewels along the way. Duolingo, how I love your style!
