Big biscuits are better

A short newspaper story told me more than I wanted to know. There’s a new government program underway to improve internet speeds, and the applications for the extra money have to be filed by the end of December. The article even took the time to enumerate the firms involved. Great! Except that none operate in my immediate area, and none have approached me as a potential customer. I don’t need to have things written in colour – not even crayon. Once again, I have to accept that I live too far from the focus of the market. Elon, if you’re listening…

Right on return? The dog does not understand

In today’s news, Hurricane Teddy passed through, in stealth mode. From where I sit, this barely kept one from kite flying. That’s a good thing, I guess.

New way to listen to tunes

Headed outside with the special brush, to spend some time with the special dog. At a rough calculation, he’s losing enough fur to keep all the neighbourhood squirrels in warm nests for the winter. Had to stop, because I fear we won’t recognize him (colour shift, toward the gray).

The pitfall of transparency

Today’s pet peeve involves my adventures with water glasses. Unlike my preferred coffee mug, the daily rations of drinking water are served in transparent tumblers. Yes, occasionally a glass is a glass. And although being able to see if something is half-full/half-empty of whatever (milk; juice; sparkling water), I don’t have the visual acuity of my youth. Dim the lights and distract me with other jobs… more and more often I find myself dealing with minor mishaps. Rarely am I forced to clean up spilled milk, but bubbly water is hazardous to everything around me. Documents. Electronics. The floor. All equally apt to get wet when least required.

In anticipation of the dreaded school restart

Not intending to start with a scandalous tale here, but I awoke with a stranger in the bed this morning. What struck me most were the blue eyes, and the tail.

Finally, a quarantine tester

Another break in the routine. This evening, we have a second dog (a loaner from a neighbour). It really isn’t just my dog that has a failure to communicate; this one also avoids conversation, and seems attentive to the possibility of food. Could it be that dogs don’t talk much?

A sling (for outrageous fortune)

I received a short message from a neighbour, today. A short reminder to try and see the movie starring her brother… wait? What? Does this mean that I know someone related to a Hollywood star? Indeed!

Bent, not broken

Today, we’re dealing with a change-up in routine. Part of it has been triggered by broken stuff. Like the front UV filter on a preferred camera lens. I had to take the filter apart, in order to remove the pieces of glass, and then subvert the bent filter frame. The threading is fine, and precise. When you knock the filter, bending the frame, things no longer disassemble in the right way. Had to get the vise grips out and force my game. The filter is now gone to landfill, and Amazon should deliver a replacement within the week. I shorted out the wait game by swapping a filter from another preferred lens (mine) and we’re good to go for the next few days.

Another dog in our bubble

The phrase “it takes a community” is being tested, here, this evening. Suddenly, the number of dogs has doubled, and all I have to distract is a bag of liver treats. They don’t show an interest in quiet conversation, so my role is simplified; I hand out things that I wouldn’t eat, even on a bet, and they respond by wagging their tails. Almost wrote “tales”, but they haven’t told me any, yet.

Number shame

I really wish that our dog could talk.

Not in that shouty voice that he uses with the garbage truck and delivery vans and our car and the wandering fox. I want conversation.
