The pitfall of transparency
Today’s pet peeve involves my adventures with water glasses. Unlike my preferred coffee mug, the daily rations of drinking water are served in transparent tumblers. Yes, occasionally a glass is a glass. And although being able to see if something is half-full/half-empty of whatever (milk; juice; sparkling water), I don’t have the visual acuity of my youth. Dim the lights and distract me with other jobs… more and more often I find myself dealing with minor mishaps. Rarely am I forced to clean up spilled milk, but bubbly water is hazardous to everything around me. Documents. Electronics. The floor. All equally apt to get wet when least required.
Oh well. Life goes on. I hope.
We did a good turn for a neighbour, sheltering their blue-eyed baby this afternoon. Not a REAL baby; their dog. Once the initial period of “stranger in a strange land” passes, the couch is shared, and the snores of all dogs combine. Hardly stressful, as long as all waste bins are moved out of view. In fact, we do this so well that tomorrow will be a repeat. I mean, I’m here, so what’s the fuss.
My laptop is recovering, slowly. I accepted the need to reformat and restore, and right now I am doing the dance of the drivers. I have a working wifi card, and my copy of Firefox is downloading. Next on the todo list – try to get my bookmarks and other personal details reloaded from one or more of the backups. Fun for the next couple of days. Hey, soon we move into September. Maybe I will be ready. I yearn for simpler times, when a version of WordStar and a box of diskettes made anything possible.
