I could wait until the screen fades to black, but I think we
know the end of our local movie. History has been made, as the pundits say. We
now have a minority government going forward, with all three major parties
coming to the table. The premier did not win his side, and there is a strong
expectation that he will retire to the manor, having had a full career. The
final numbers did not follow the forecasts (the national press was showing
intent interest, given the possibility of a Green governance). And for those of
us who live here and pay the bills, this is a moment to let out our collective
held breath. We have interesting times ahead.

Tomorrow, we vote. Most of us. There are so many rules: are
you old enough, have you lived here long enough, can you make an X? Sometime tomorrow
evening (not too late, as I need my rest) we should have a result that allows
declaration of the next government. Right now, with 26 out of 27 ridings being
contested, and a minimum of three parties, almost any result is possible.
However…

Despair. The only word that explains my feeling after
elections. Although most people are able to avoid the near occasion of
politics, a small group seems drawn “like a moth to a flame” to the idea of
sitting in a large room and deciding the destiny of everyone else.

More signs of spring: the CG William Alexander was down
below this afternoon. That’s proof that the ice has left; the buoys are being
set out. With the start of lobster season still two weeks away, call it early.
As well, the RV left the driveway for a bit this afternoon. That’s proof that
we can dare to burn off some of the winter Diesel, given that starting and
running are now assured. And I called and confirmed that we will install the
air chiller unit, ASAP. Getting that done before the heat wave.

Twice this week, people have rung the doorbell. Seems that
with the melting snow, the wall around the castle is disappearing. I’m too lazy
to dig a moat, or construct a trebuchet, ergo I’m going straight through the
summer and recalling winter, forthwith. Are you with me on this?

Every time I hear a vehicle in the driveway, and the dog
doesn’t, I wonder. Is he turning into one of those older deaf canines that we
used to see in the cartoons? This time around, that stealth courier guy who
avoids any contact with the homeowner, as he hides boxes from Amazon in the
garage. Perfect camouflage for said containers. Some day, I’m going to learn
about all of our deliveries that passed under our radar. I’ll blame the dog, of
course.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve had a reason to go to the
city. A minor one, but in winter, it takes something more than whimsy to get me
out of the house. Today, another medical appointment. Minor. And the word that
I do not need to return for another month. Well, that’s well timed. The snow is
(almost) gone, and now I’ll need to think up real excuses if I want to see
stoplights and restaurants.

A movie that distracts one: might I suggest Christopher Robin. Once you get past the whole fever dream aspect of stuffed toys in a foggy woodland, there’s lots to see. Trains. More trains. The Hundred Acre Wood.

Having spent decades in a state of anonymity, I have had to
adjust to rural living. In the city, although you grow familiar with faces that
cross your path regularly, not one knows your name. I’ve tested this. Here
among the trees, people do recognize you.
