Deciding destinies

posted in politics |

Despair. The only word that explains my feeling after elections. Although most people are able to avoid the near occasion of politics, a small group seems drawn “like a moth to a flame” to the idea of sitting in a large room and deciding the destiny of everyone else.

Yesterday, AB chose their flavor of governance for the next few years. Closely matches what happened in ON, only months ago. And the future doesn’t look progressive, or social. Rather, large swaths of the country are headed down a bumpy road to discomfort. I think. Actually, most political dynasties have very little effect on real life, but the chance for mishap is always there. We have our own provincial elections, next week, and NL got the call today.

At the federal level, we know that the fall is going to be filled with surprises. After almost a decade of darkness, we had moved into “sunny ways”, and that might end. I’m getting old enough to realize how political stupidity can mark a generation.

No matter. Like last night’s snowfall, this too shall pass.

With the embers not yet cold, the promises to rebuild have started, in the case of the Paris church fire. What should surprise anyone is how easily money can be found for something like this, while so much more of society lives in poverty. Why can’t we mobilize the same response intensity for things that matter. Seriously. The priorities are twisted. I’m fortunate: I live in a warm house, with clean water and a relative richness of diet. I’m fortunate. This isn’t a rule. When we can rebuild a damaged church, we should be able to fix the other stuff.
