We have uneven leadership, it seems. While many of us (the wise ones, just so you know) are content to isolate and avoid painful death, there are certain people with access to the bully pulpit who now believe we “need to get back to work”. The economy, apparently.

For the next while, keeping track of the latest medical mystery is important. At least, I guess so. Locally, our provincial government has opened two COVID-19 clinics. Schools have published a protocol for dealing with any student that gets up in “germ’s way” due to travel during their March break. Universities (plural) are locking classroom doors and telling students to profit from the online courses that once were considered 3rd rate.

Tonight, in a complete change of speed, we went out to dine. Real restaurant food. No assembly line burgers; I had a wonderful potato-bacon soup followed by a fancy bit of chicken that had met a lobster on the way by. Try it; better than it sounds. I didn’t have my usual chair, and the lighting was subtle (no glow from a laptop screen). But, I enjoyed the meal. And now I’m home for some late evening spectator time (yes, curling).

In another chapter of “making things difficult”, yesterday was the first of the primaries in the US. Now, I don’t exactly understand the process, but it sounds like a small, intimate election. Which leaves a whole nation wondering why there are no published results (as of late this afternoon).

The morning began with a quick shout-out from an old friend. We try to touch base, at least on this date, each year. Why? Well, I have a special affinity for that movie, Groundhog Day. Even if there are no fat rodents in my yard, I care about the idea that some things should happen, annually. Besides my birthday. Oh, and if the news reports can be trusted, some shadows were spotted, elsewhere. Some shadows were not. Therefore, winter is not over yet, but the actual time before our lawn returns is uncertain.

I am fortunate. My country has avoided any major upheaval, for my whole lifetime. Why, getting a new flag and “bringing home” the constitution are seen as important dates, even though neither required more than a polite nod and handshake. Meanwhile, other countries jump through hoops just to get through to sunset.

The wheels of justice turn slowly. I mean, I assume so, having never had a “day in court”. But, that impeachment mess, to the south of us: Wow! The idea of showing the man behind the desk to the door has been floating (like a mirage) since 2016. Today, the official convocation to a trial was sent. We still don’t know who will show up to “the party”, but it makes for interesting times.

Snap! That wind is cold. I’m really looking forward to mid-week, when this “cold snap” takes a break. Long enough to drive the big Green Machine indoors, and move the faithful flower pot away from the plow line. The deck furniture can wait (very weather resistant), and I rather enjoy the assistance provided by a thin layer of snow, going downhill. Soon. Oh, and don’t forget the BBQ. I don’t imagine I’ll do much grill time between now and spring, so it also deserves a warm and dry place to hibernate. I can’t imagine how all those folks in the south get by without the fun of fall.

Looking back, school was surprisingly homogenous. On a day-to-day basis, ideological conflict was absent. We all went to the same classrooms, and herd mentality coupled with a singular curriculum meant that a differing opinion on anything was beyond rare.

It is very dark outside. I haven’t turned on the lights, because there are people about. At least, I hope they’re people. A car came in the yard, earlier, stopped, waited, left again. No lights; works every time.
