An important date, for the worst of reasons
I am fortunate. My country has avoided any major upheaval, for my whole lifetime. Why, getting a new flag and “bringing home” the constitution are seen as important dates, even though neither required more than a polite nod and handshake. Meanwhile, other countries jump through hoops just to get through to sunset.
Today, when people look at historic dates, may be something that gets memorized in classes in high school. Let’s consider it. In the United Kingdom, Brexit. For real. A major nation (in its own eyes, at least) has decided to step on its own toes (no foot shooting; guns are rare) and undo what was actually a very successful economic union with the neighbours. Going forward, a bumpy road, as they try to negotiate deals that will (in all likelihood) be pale shadows of what they had until minutes ago.
In the United States, the impeachment crisis is also coming to a head. The boil has not been lanced, notwithstanding. Consider their choice: to hold a trial with no witnesses and no testimony. In other words, a big, fat nothing that has cost months of effort and leaves the road forward bumpy. Just like the UK. The US has a hard time learning from its own errors, so don’t expect this to terminate on a happy note.
Meanwhile, we had our next snow storm cancelled… for now. A storm is a storm. But, when Groundhog day dawns on Sunday, the rodent from the NS hinterland will be left in his burrow. The festivities have been cancelled due to a storm (which was cancelled for us). You can’t make this kind of silliness happen without folks like me taking notice.
