(What do you do with) a seventh ring?

Some days, just laying in bed, with a couple of dogs, sounds like a plan… that could have been. Except, we had already made an appointment with our local electrician, and he was on the door step before coffee time. Now, I’m glad we have access to tradespeople that can come the day after being called. And that show up. And that can take a half-baked verbal plan and turn it into what we want. Worth it, and more. Our basement has moved that much closer to being complete.

More than a big house, this time

Perhaps I lack a key element in my personal culture: I never played for a team. Behind us, historically, the team sport has a place of reverence. And cheering for your favourites isn’t the same thing as actually getting out on the field (or the ice; Canadian culture…)

Trying to see through the mist

Unexpected shift in my window on the world: suddenly, I feel like I’m a prisoner, but that the view from the window has faded to a flat gray. I just want things to get back to normal. In part, I deal poorly with noise, and living in an construction site isn’t recommended for that take on things. When the contractor, who does his best to accommodate us, showed up after dark (easy to do, now that we’re heading straight into that seasonal disorder called lack of long days), I felt trapped. In my own home. The power saw, power nailer, power everything ups the ambient noise level to something I just want to end.

It looked like snow

I now take my warnings from social media. The most recent trigger? A photo by an RV owner, showing what happens when your container of DEF overflows; my immediate thought was “That could happen to me”, and I went straight out to remove the potential chemical volcano from where it has sat, all year long. One of those things that had never crossed my mind, but after seeing a single photo I was convinced to act.

The end of my retail dream

Shortly before dawn, I received notice that my company was going out of business. Acquired by a hedge fund, in the south. And worse, my investment would never be recovered.

An entertainment famine begins

Did someone decide to do a remake of “The Stand”? Without telling the rest of us? I can hardly keep up.

The rock meets the pebble, again

I’m back in a good place. Another year, according to the calendar, but when I settled into my spot in front of the TV,  it was as if only a few days had gone by.

Will you walk with me (again)?

Went for a long walk on the beach, this afternoon. There are no reference points, but let’s make a rough estimate, that the distance was about eight kilometers. Not much of a sample, but enough to make one thing clear. On a beach, for all the hype about “every particle of sand being unique”, there’s a remarkable sameness. Sand is sand (is sand), and it has an amazing ability to get inside shoes. Take that, fractal theory!

After all the stones have been cast

The icebreaker left, just after sunrise. This is the first time a ship has been at anchor, in view, overnight, and I rather appreciated the change in routine.
