Trying to see through the mist

posted in health, sports |

Unexpected shift in my window on the world: suddenly, I feel like I’m a prisoner, but that the view from the window has faded to a flat gray. I just want things to get back to normal. In part, I deal poorly with noise, and living in an construction site isn’t recommended for that take on things. When the contractor, who does his best to accommodate us, showed up after dark (easy to do, now that we’re heading straight into that seasonal disorder called lack of long days), I felt trapped. In my own home. The power saw, power nailer, power everything ups the ambient noise level to something I just want to end.

Of course, we really want the project to finish, so I’m going to continue on as if things are wonderful. Might be time to go for a “cone of silence”, or at a minimum headphones and the soundtrack of my choice.

The news of the day carried a story that universities are shutting down their sports programs for the winter. Now, I never “played varsity”, but a LOT of my residence neighbours did; this is a big deal in their lives. Say what you will, but for some people being part of a team effort is more important than anything else in their lives (thankfully, I never caught that particular virus). For those that attend post-secondary for the chance to compete (no, it has nothing to do with higher learning), their winter just got longer. I hope they can tough it through until next season.
