Potentially, potatoes

For a farmer, the day that your crop has ben planted is a significant one. It also is a sign of hope. Long before that first rainfall, the belief that everything is going to be OK exists. I look at the field below here, and I realize that in just a few months, there’ll be enough potatoes to get me through the next winter. All this, from a couple of afternoon’s worth of labour.

Boiling my water via technology

My day to experiment with technology. I found our induction hotplate, measured a litre of cold water into a suitable pan, and plugged the hotplate into the “battery box”. Not the technical term for it, but a better one, when explaining to those unfamiliar with my new toy.

Preparing for those dark moments

Another afternoon, squandered. Perhaps that isn’t he best word, but I’m still trying to decide how much I would be willing to pay for some solar panels. The sweet point is around $1 a watt, here in Canada. The people at Amazon can deliver, once I commit to the idea of purchasing. And there goes the hamster in the wheel.

The right tool for one job, at least

Recently, I decided that it was time to buy the right tool for the job. In this case, removing the fancy lock nut covers on the RV. Someone had posted a hint on social media, and I had checked with the only relative that actually runs a tool store. It wasn’t just a rumour, the tool has a name and a part number.

MIA: One drain plug

Even though we have no travel plans, short term, I’m a conscientious RV person. Every fall, before the onset of cold weather and snow, I do what is known in the circles as “winterization”. Too long  to explain, but it does kill an afternoon. And every spring, once I feel confident that there are no sudden ice age signs, I go to the other extreme (known as “de-winterization”).

Listen for that telltale gurgling

Outside, the sun is shining. The winds are calm. I’m bored. What a perfect day to check the DEF level!

Could I print a better card?

Hang in there. I’ll think of something that sets today apart from earlier moments in my life. Let me check the news; there is always something going on over there. News, right?

No planes? Let me check on something.

Has anyone else noted (lately) that there are fewer planes overhead? If it was just me, I could say that my lessened observation time (looking up instead of ahead of me) could be a reason, but I have something more scientific on my side: a tiny radio received that “watches” for commercial aircraft and sends the salient details to somewhere else. Rather, I HAD a tiny radio, until it stopped working a couple of days back.

Plugged in, as a start

Getting up in the middle of the night with a restless dog does come with some benefits. For example, I have a better idea about how many boats are fishing offshore (from me) at night. A lot more than I would have guessed. Perhaps I should try and harvest some shoreline food; there must be some species that isn’t allocated to the industry. More research needed.

Imagine an exploding thread (if you can)

Having lived in a large city for better than three decades, I still take  note of things that go on. Politically, the population learned today that the present mayor will not be offering again (he sat in the big chair for a full fourteen winters). Kind of a big deal, given the multi-billion dollar infrastructure projects that are underway. I mean, there are a lot of construction firms that will now be trying to see the future, given the way monies are distributed. I’ll be watching this one.
