Potentially, potatoes

posted in food, technology |

For a farmer, the day that your crop has ben planted is a significant one. It also is a sign of hope. Long before that first rainfall, the belief that everything is going to be OK exists. I look at the field below here, and I realize that in just a few months, there’ll be enough potatoes to get me through the next winter. All this, from a couple of afternoon’s worth of labour.

Now, I said that I didn’t know, until yesterday, what would be seeded. And I don’t know if nature will be clement. Will it be too hot? Or wet? Or will a storm wreak havoc? The farmer believes: in learned skills, and land that has already brought forth crops. When the season ends, the machines will come, and pick up the crop, and the cycle will start all over again.

My next project will involve me constructing a frame to support some simple solar panels. I can’t lean them up against the side of the rig, nor let them lie on the lawn, so I’m checking out other people’s ideas. Maybe I can put together something that doesn’t cost me a lot of dollars, or take up too much space. Something practical, and attractive. A tall effort. I’ll post pictures once I have things done.

I’m also shopping for an EasyStart. It turns out that compressors, in the sense of air conditioning, require a lot of current to get started. Much like me, in the morning. And there are units out there, that come with videos to allow home installation. My kind of project.
