My in-house campaign, for a “No-Mow May” is at an end. Three weeks, isn’t bad. The Big Green Machine, kept away from the world since last autumn, was rolled out from the garabge and allowed to drive in random circles and other forms. Until every little star was gone. That’s right. They weren’t weeds. They were a noble part of the Aster family. Given a bit more time, we could have turned the lawn into a yellow study in uncontrolled growth. No, not weeds.

This afternoon, I found myself wondering how far it was to the largest city in our area. I decided to look beyong the provincial map, and went for a regional version. There it was. A true city, with two bridges and a long history. My first calculation of the distance, using thumb prints on the screen, did not scale well, so I asked my friend, Google. About two hundred kilometers, give or take a knuckle.

I am being pushed to explore new content delivery systems. Yesterday, a new title was released, in paper, ebook and audible formats, which certainly expands my possibilities.

To the enterprising young man that phoned earlier, referring to me as “Grandpa” and asking if I still remembered him: please call back. I have so many questions. Are we related through your mother or father? Have you met my dog? Do you like long swims off a short pier? As a genealogist, I’m always seeking new family connections, and you could add a whole (as yet unexplored) limb to my research tree. Please, call back. After all those calls about my iPhone headed for China, I need some comic relief.

My ability to quantify precipitation, particulary rainfall, is limited. If I place a bucket by the outside door, and the bucket fills overnight, I can call that heavy. If it sounds like a firehose on the roof, for several minutes, not so much. This afternoon, we had exactly that level. I had been invoted to go for a walk in the woods, and I had declined. Other responsibilities, like doing my laundry. A weak excuse that saved me from being really wet, I guess.

Time to turn my attention to comfort foods. Those menu choices that subdue the hungry worf, in moments when axiety and stress are prominent. Or just when we’re hungry. Who am I to determine your reasons? Today, I returned to meatloaf.

This was a good evening to “go for a ride” as folks say. We had a goal; retrieve some more lobster, and a partial address. More on that, later, maybe.

This afternoon, our neighbour stopped by with a gift; two “bugs”. Forget any amateur radio connection (think Morse, quick). Forget insects. This involved a pair of crustaceans, recently rescued from the depths of the ocean.

As of right now, the RV is parked in the driveway. At home. Not exactly “boondocking” but the electrical umbilical cord means that testing things is easy. With that noted, today I decided to heat some water. Just a little. On with the mains switch and wait for twenty miniutes (the time required for a hot cup of coffee to cool off). With that, I had hot water in the galley, and another pre-season test completed successfully. I was too keen to stop there, so I tested the outside shower. Not enough to wet myselft; I just wanted to make sure that the fancy blue slinky hose was useful. Unlike other years, no penetrating oil or rubber mallets were employed. Everything connected as if it was designed to be that simple. A good round of tests.

This morning, I received an unexpected gift. Think of it as a tool to investigate my environment. I will allow others to discern my intentions. I was told not to poke or prod others with (it) in moments of frustration. The tool folds up for moments when I’m in a confined space, and I haven’t yet given it a name. Eventually, that will change. This marks a transition in my public appearance, although I have rarely “worn” white in past.
