After yesterday, I still had questions about the debt reduction model of scam. Happily, another call came in this afternoon. Proof that this is a business model that has no respect for the sanctity of the weekend. With an expert on the line, I asked who was actually going to pay for my reduced debt… no real answer. So, I checked to see if there was a maximum, and got the clarification about how it would be calculated once the numbers were known (my credit card numbers, to clarify). I went one tiny step further, and asked if there was a minimum balance; say, one dollar. I guess that was too small, because the call ended abruptly. I’ll find out more, the next call. There is always another opportunity.

Those preposterous proposals that come in, every day, on my personal hotline to silliness are some of the best fun. You may think of them as “scam calls”, with the flashing red lights in your mind. I think of them as something different. A study into the mindset that funds the efforts. I remind myself that this is just a job, under pressure, for folks that have mediocre language skills and the ability to read a script.

I am filled (filling?) with a renewed sense of hope. Seasonal. And it has nothing to do with our local snow cover (our mini icecap) melting away. It has to do with restaurant menus.

Thanks to my bulletins via social media, I learned that a classmate from high school is celebrating a birthday. And based on some mental math, I calculated that this is likely a double-digit moment. We are both looking at a half-century in the rear view mirror. I haven’t visited much with my cohort from secondary school. Long distances, evolving lives, whatever. But my memory for small details is astounding. I can tell you the musical instruments we played, respectively, and the parts of town where our families resided. Pretty good after so many years.

Let’s play a short game of conjecture. I’ve lived in a state of peace, my whole life. What liittle I know of war comes from movies and TV documentaries. In other words, I really don’t know much. Met a refugee once or twice. Again, I don’t know much. I am aware that we have a very long border with our nearest neighbours; when I crossed, I had to remove my sunglasses and fprfeit a bag of grapes. Uneventful moments. And I have heard that crossing that long border, without permission, could lead to some serious discomfort.

Twice a year, to celebrate the changing seasons, there are routines. In the case of the car, we swap between two sets of tires. In the case of the house, we move the lawn furniture. Down the hill for winter, and up the hill for summer. The stuff never gets any lighter. Today, we set our cap on summer, with the BBQ next on my list of heavy stuff to move around. So, we’re ready to eat outside. Maybe. It did snow, a couple of evenings ago.

I suspect that I have too much free time. Proof? In the variety of questions I ask (myself), during that endless conversation going on in my mind.

I envy those who pass their life in a community where only one language is used. Your lives must be so simple. When you add a second language, you have to rethink everything. An example: that question where you ask someone “How do you say”? Do you actually want to know “How do I say”? Or worse, “How do we say”? Think about it.

Music is good. Good music is better. And the best? Easy. Good music that you can find again. We all like to believe that we have good memories, but tunes go “in one ear and out the other”. Unless you can find the tune again, and then learn to play it yourself. So, where am I going with this?

Distance is all relative. If the city seems almost too far away to visit (it’s one hour, give or take) there’s a winderful little town just down the way (twenty minutes, with me as the designated passenger). I find that I can get most things I need, although my needs are humble.
