Another season swap

posted in Uncategorized |

Twice a year, to celebrate the changing seasons, there are routines. In the case of the car, we swap between two sets of tires. In the case of the house, we move the lawn furniture. Down the hill for winter, and up the hill for summer. The stuff never gets any lighter. Today, we set our cap on summer, with the BBQ next on my list of heavy stuff to move around. So, we’re ready to eat outside. Maybe. It did snow, a couple of evenings ago.

Food: an excuse to do research on YouTube. I’m not a big recipe buff, but I do want to know why we have certain items on our menus.

First up, a staple of meals, when we’re not into boiled potatoes. Rice. And it turns out that what I eat is not something eaten everywhere else. I get my rice from cardboard boxes, or a small plasitc sack Not exactly “instant rice”, but close. And I don’t wash the grains. Never knew it was a thing. However… for those that eat “real rice”, washing is part of the preparations. I now know more about the history behind  practice. And I have no intention of reviewing what I learned. Maybe some other day.

Pork. Popular, locally. Bacon. Pork chops. Curry. Turns out that elsewhere in the world, that would not happen. And now I know more about the why. Again, not going to review my newfound knowledge. Any time food preferences are codified into culturaal laws, you know that the reasons will be messy.

And tomorrow, our local Thai takeout starts a new season. I might go and join the lineup. Or not. Thai food showed up on our local radar last year. Or was it the year before that? All a big blur. Getting Pad .noodles was a positive addition in a world where fish and chips is seen as the warmup to a lobster roll. Tomorrow. There are weeks left in the summer season, so I don’t need to rush.
