Chasing the tunes
Music is good. Good music is better. And the best? Easy. Good music that you can find again. We all like to believe that we have good memories, but tunes go “in one ear and out the other”. Unless you can find the tune again, and then learn to play it yourself. So, where am I going with this?
Our habits of consuming music have changed. Back in my day, we had the Top 40, which as a capsule based on the number of tunes the DJ could fit into a two hour program. We didn’t have music on the radio, 24/7. We had a slot, after supper but before curfew, where those that had cars drove around in circles, downtown, listening to the list. It changed, week after week, keeping us from going slowly insane.
I remember the fascination that Much Music held, with videos that went with the songs. And then life caught up with me, and I have no idea what people listened to during the next few decades. But, now we have YouTube, which serves up videos on demand. And the list is much better. A thousand times better. How did we survive having 40 (similar) songs? I consume a lot of “the stream”. No satisfaction with Spotify; I want my personal music to be on demand, and I accept the hints. New music, that can be loosely grouped in with my usual. Bliss!
Don’t ask me for recommendations. I think of myself as having a wide range of musical tastes, and I’m sure that some of my feed will annoy you. Dig for yourself, in the garden. And count your blessings. No Top 40 limitations. Also, no need to store boxes of vinyl.
