The official explanation is that my site is in a bad neighbourhood. I’m not sure. As of this afternoon, neither this blog nor the weather station reporting site can be reached at work, due to the efficient nature of our corporate firewall. Or from wher I sit, today is not like yesterday.

I’m thinking about borrowing a custom from another culture, to get around a perceived difficulty. All that remains is to receive the accord of those involved. One small glitch; none of us are members of the loaning culture.

As I sit and read from the book of blog postings I received during the holidays, I’m a little jealous. The author (a local newspaper columnist) writes, with a depth and style I can only aspire to. The big difference is that he tells you when he likes something (the easy part) but also when he doesn’t.

I didn’t remember when, actually. Maybe back in high school, during one of the thousand or more English classes. Or in a book, from the public library. But given that Mr. Thurber actually composed the story in 1939, it had to fit in somewhere on my timeline. Little matter.

It was a bargain. The colour (a hopeless tan) didn’t even enter into the pre-purchase analysis. It was on sale! 66% off. And in my rushed state of mind, I didn’t even consider taking two. Tonight, I returned to the site of my oversight, and there were none remaining. Except, of course, at full price and I wasn’t willing to compromise. We’ll just have to share the only “day holster for DSLR” in the house.

The things we do to help others! Today, I helped someone move their telephone existence from an Android to an iOS. Not the way that I see my own life evolving, but it can be interesting to see how “the bumps in the road rattle the bus”. The two systems are similar in end function, but there isn’t a SNAP! and the job is done button among all those pretty icons.

There are places I could have visited, and didn’t. This evening, a documentary on seabird research took me, virtually, to the Digges Islands. Not that any of you are likely to go there, either; the site is really not on any road map. At a time in my life when I didn’t have any municipal taxes to pay, or a driveway to clear, I was invited to serve as a research assistant to a scientist. And I said no. Too late.

It will take years, but I’m becoming a more vigilant shopper. At the grocery, at least. Recently, I brought home a lovely bag of bagels. All cheesy, and golden, and ready for the next time I had the urge. Sadly, within a day, the gold turned green. Penicillin, on the cheap. I received some pointed advice from the head buyer, hung my head in shame and vowed to improve my life skills.

A trifecta: had a ride home from work, arriving before dark, with the temperature above freezing. Too good to let pass. Now the lights are out of the tree in front of the house, and the 10 cm layer of ice has been removed from the stoop. Go ahead, freeze some more. At least we won’t have to swim (or slide) out to the street.

I’m not crying, really. That constant drip from one eye may look like tears, but it’s not quite the same thing.
