Life behind the wall

posted in computing |

The official explanation is that my site is in a bad neighbourhood. I’m not sure. As of this afternoon, neither this blog nor the weather station reporting site can be reached at work, due to the efficient nature of our corporate firewall. Or from wher I sit, today is not like yesterday.

The premise is that we are protected from the nasty content of the web, by an expensive combination of classifications and deep packet examination. What really happens is that a corporation with no other ties to us than the cheques we send, decides when a particular web site has made a faux pas. Like showing the temperature outside?

This domain is hosted by a firm that shares a given address with other domains. If one of them sneezes, the rest of us catch fatal pneumonia. I’ve submitted my URL for reclassification but this may take weeks. For those of you, beyond the pale, enjoy. The rest of us will do without.

Hard to begrudge him another evening of praise. Former prime minister Chretien is being recognized for fifty years of public service. That’s laudable. And it reminds me; may we never have to offer the current holder of the office a similar tribute. Can you imagine a half century of sweaters and bad piano playing?

Your next personal music player may cost a little more. Tariffs are important when you need to protect a particular segment of an industry.  Although there’s a lot of confusion (I read the article three times and still have no idea what was said), it appears that prices are about to go up. Keep watching. Listening may be trickier.
