Used to be, I wondered why a 24-hour grocery store would be a good idea. Never had an urge to stock up on canned goods at 3 a.m.; by extension, neither did anyone else. And then, this morning, unable to provide coffee to others due to a shortage of dairy products (cheese doesn’t count as a substitute), I found myself sitting in the parking lot, in a howling rainstorm, waiting for the doors to open (under their own power, given the winds). Too early by twenty minutes, and too stubborn to go to another store. At least I had radio, although CBC early is still CBC.

An interesting law has been proposed, south of here. The intent is to allow consumers to choose the channel mix they want in their cable package. No more A+B+C if you want D. The chance of this passing the corporate gauntlet is similar to snowballs in a mythical hot place. Still, some of us would love new jurisprudence, in our own quest for enlightenment. Also in the law, an end to game blackouts in team towns. Don’t laugh. TV doesn’t have to be bad and unfair (just expensive).

Until such time as we can afford a family spaceship, others will have to provide vacation snapshots. A special shout-out to Dr. Hadfield, who plays a mean guitar and finds time to point the camera out the windows while doing other important things.

My bus ride did the retrograde motion thing, again today. I called client service, and while on the phone, the bus looped back around and by. Bye. No chance of making a connection, and no sense waiting on hold. You do enough waiting in the pubic transit orbit. By the time my next bus came along, I was back to being zen. That might have been due to the 29.8C temperature.

My preferred dance step is a familiar one: “One step forward, two steps back”. Not progressive (or conservative) by nature, it satisfies without ever carrying too far away from familiar territory. This evening, the reactivation of a wiki, using newer versions of everything, demonstrated exactly that. My image files are MIA, and I have a suspicion that I’m going to be off trying to recreate history at a later moment. I know; nobody else cares.

If you are in business, do you believe that your raw materials should be free, your environmental responsibility should rub shoulders with Zero and your rights should trump just about everyone else? Then I have a place for you; particularly if you are involved in the mining industry. Come on down to Quebec, where even the preachiest politicians will forgive your transactions.

Renewal. Works for so many things, like personal computers. For very close to four years now, I’ve been dragging a netbook along on vacation; size does matter. And after the last trip, when I realized that “full hard drive” is not something to strive for, the idea has been simmering about a small upgrade. With a larger drive left over from another upgrade, it was time to rebuild the holiday machine.

To be noted on my calendar: this was a “get it done” day. Unable to avoid certain jobs on the list, due to the summer temperatures, I decided to be proactive. As the end of the day approaches, my list is shorter and my spirit is good. And I will know if the wind blows through the night.

A funny thing happened on the way to the weekend. We had a departmental meeting, and for the first time in more than a decade, the time was worthwhile. New boss. New attitude. No posturing. Collaborative discussion. A promise of more to come. Might be on my way out, but more than my attitude has changed. And the mention of vacation schedules didn’t degrade into something ugly.

I’m one of those who grants others the right to reasonable doubt. You probably aren’t wrong, on purpose. Exception to note: politicians. Second exception: my mobile telephone supplier.
