When every problem resembles a protruding nail

The storm watch didn’t fool the school boards. Shrew players in the bus transport poker game, they called the bluff and the day was “as scheduled”. No early holiday. Actually, a good call, because the storm is here, now, (after supper) and there was no apocalyse to complicate getting the yellow limos from door to door.

Waiting for the apocalypse, in whatever form

What to do? On one hand, an impending snow storm. On the other, an impending end of time. With my luck, choice #3 will kick in, and I’ll be at work with a really long ride home on the bus because of one of the other two possibilities. Or both…

The yo-yo train

With all the new snow, the morning could have been messy, or beautiful. I’ll let you draw your own conclusion.

The low stress version of a snow day

Crossing my fingers may have worked.  Two weather systems and an expensive forecasting system may have helped, a little. Even though the roads were clear, at dawn, the school boards of this region decided to go with cautious. Snow day!

Changing positions

Early morning on the bus. Perfect for daydreaming. What if?

What if I changed jobs? Got back off the bus, and wandered into the small store, where the Help Wanted sign has gone hi-tech: a flat screen TV behind the cash register. I could offer my services, based on a lifetime of buying things in just such a store. A quick outline of my intention to deal with each client promptly, with a friendly air. During quiet moments, I could rearrange the magazine racks, or test new coffee blends that would amaze the regulars. I know how to make change in the metric system, and if we suddenly had a lapse of sanity and implanted the Imperial system (pence, shillings, pounds) I would adjust accordingly.

Leave my caped crusader tale alone

Call me a traditionalist. I am, after all, a child of the ’60s (among other decades). I’m not given to change for the sake thereof. This weekend, the latest Batman movie was running on DVD here, and I was not impressed. That’s not the real caped crusader. Sure, some of the names were familiar, but I didn’t find myself engrossed in the story. If there was one… nice heliwhatever, though.

Put both arms in the air (like you just don’t care)

I now own an internal DVD burner for a laptop. After spending the requisite two hours over a stove (it’s a long story), I have determined that this is not the burner for my laptop.  Not a big deal, really. Through disassembly, I determined why my original burner was acting unpredictably. The original drive had an extra plastic piece inside that was jamming up the works.  If ever I own another laptop that needs a replacement drive, I’m ready.

A guy’s night kind of meal

A busy time for the postal people. I guess. Otherwise, I have no explanation for the alarming absence of packages in my mailbox. Stuff that should arrive before a circled date on my calendar, and that hasn’t. Still a week to run, so I’m not going to get frantic about things, but here’s hoping that Monday is a special day.

Plastic cash and quality maps

He jumped from the cab, tore a bill in half and handed it to the driver. “Wait for me”.

Fast forward to 2012. Try to tear that new $20 in half. I dare you. Give up? Want a pair of scissors? With the introduction of new media for our Canuck currency, we’re bringing an end to certain images. No more setting the gap on your telegraph key. No more setting the points on your hotrod. No more lighting that cigar with a bill from our mint. Might melt and burn your fingers, badly. And yes, I could see through the bill I received this morning; holey money!

Seeking the proper replacement (is hard)

I feel a certain kinship with those rugged individuals that keep their automobile on the road, long after all warranties have expired. You continue, despite the financial pain of repairs, because you like your car. In a way that those who lease and change every couple of years have never accepted as a valid owner model, you will go to great lengths.
