Any time the BBQ gets put away before the rain begins, it qualifies as a success. And so here we are, with supper done and a quiet evening stretching ahead. Like most evenings, actually. Who knew that my life would become a series of quiet evenings?

Although I can’t rationalize the cost, I’d love to upgrade the solar system (not THE solar system) on the RV. The house battery charging system, to cut the confusion. Right now, there is a single panel on the coach roof, and it helps, a little. After a demonstration from a fellow traveler in a park last summer, it is possible to go for something “stronger”. More panels, better monitor systems, eventually better batteries. LiFePO4, if you’re curious. My home efforts are part of the personal education required, although I’d want to have any upgrades done by someone with pertinent experience.

On TV, a police drama. In Danish, with subtitles. For the record, my brain hasn’t managed to change the audio track into something I understand. Reading subtitles means not doing other things (like reading things on my tablet). The productivity level has dropped, accordingly.

Here we are, late in the afternoon on the final weekend in June. Only because FB brought it to my attention, I realized that the amateur radio community on this continent is starting to clean up from another Field Day exercise. This is one of those events where I should have got involved; I have the time, the field, the equipment and the knowledge. Trapped in my bubble, I haven’t even plugged in the radio. Next year.

It used to be simple. You did the checklist: schools closed, stores closed. Easy to tell anyone who asked that, yes, this was a holiday. Now, not so clear. Actually, this is a long weekend, but it could be any day of any week, during the last few months.

Years from now, when historians wonder how Canada handled the idea of a highly contagious pandemic, I hope they’ll be able to give us a full “two thumbs up”. Or five stars. Or whatever the rating for excellence in the field. Right now, it seems to be cobbled together.

One of my early teaching jobs involved introducing a rowdy group of teens to the world of geography. More specifically, their geography. I was new to the area, and trying to explain the various regions of their province was arbitrary (to both the students and their teacher). I muddled through.

How should we react to a new pandemic? Based on the responses from south of here, we have no idea. It’s been weeks since the first head’s up that there might be a “new hired gun in town”, to use an old Western movie line.
