Open the window

Today, the province moved one step closer to tourist season. In a move that caught none by surprise, the health officer and the premier let us know that in the next couple of weeks, we should have the first sightings of the “seasonals”.

Every year, we receive visitors. Those who come through, wave and leave again within a matter of days. And those who have a “summer place”. There’s been a lot of grumbling about having to pay the land tax on a house that is off –limits. OK, fair enough. So, today, the proffer. If you can come and spend two weeks in hiding (the polite word is “under quarantine”), and you can let the government know ahead of time, proving that this wasn’t an impulse visit, you are free to cross the bridge and take up (very temporary) residence. Inevitable. After all, we’ve had no recorded deaths in our tiny jurisdiction. And anyone coming down “from away” is likely to be healthy, WEALTHY and wise. Can’t hide the dollar signs in this plan.

My kids don’t fit the profile, so they’ll have to remain elsewhere. Similarly (for now), the Yankee dollar is forbidden to play summer health poker. But, you folks from Upper Canada can start packing the car. Only a couple of weeks  more. The phrase “seasonal residents” is much better than “transient tourists”, don’t you think?

In anticipation, we received an order of face masks in today’s mail. Self-protection, etc. Now, the synchronicity is everything; the national health spokesperson also came out in favour of covered faces, today. Do you think they had a summit and decided how best to catch us all off guard? In the background, quietly playing, a song from Anne Of Green Gables:  “Open The Window“.
