Uncertain times to be a traveler

posted in economy, ham radio, health, travel |

Here we are, late in the afternoon on the final weekend in June. Only because FB brought it to my attention, I realized that the amateur radio community on this continent is starting to clean up from another Field Day exercise. This is one of those events where I should have got involved; I have the time, the field, the equipment and the knowledge. Trapped in my bubble, I haven’t even plugged in the radio. Next year.

I did go to the local store this afternoon, for milk. The only thing I noticed was the addition of another cooler chest (general stores rely on those, just as they used to keep ice blocks in a deep cellar).

And of course, I read the various news feeds. Seems that the world is starting to realize that inviting the US to your party might not be a great idea, health wise. Canada already closed down cross-border travel, and now the EU is debating whether or not tourist dollars are worth more than health. Interesting times.

Our own airlines (if you can consider private companies to be yours) are getting set to dump the idea of social distancing; selling seats is all that really matters in an industry that thrives on nickels and dimes. I don’t see myself wanting to spend several hours in a small room with recycled air. No matter the destination. And, many others share my incertitude. Do we really need to go “here and there”? I can live without the hassle of dying due to my temporary neighbours.
