Mid-road rambling

At dusk, wandering with the dog in the middle of the highway is actually quite safe, and relaxing. Any approaching vehicle betrays the trajectory minutes in advance, and with a lightly painted sky to define up and down, getting off into a deeper ditch is low risk. Besides, they were spraying down in the fields, so that trail was not open.

A Big Lunar Moment

Good intentions, with the usual fallback. The whole family headed for the campground this morning, before breakfast. The goal: to take part in a fundraising meal. The result: we arrived too early, opted to make our contribution and beat a retreat. Lost along the way: the whole concept of eating. It matters little.

Tourism begins at home

There’s probably a rule: “Tourism begins at home”. If not, I’m claiming nibs. This afternoon, caught up in the spirit of the moment, we set out to explore, while never getting beyond a ten kilometer circle of our own driveway. On the list of things to see… gift shops. It’s the end of the season, and the product (often on consignment) either has to sell or be packed and returned to the owner. Perfect timing, given my new interest in bargains.

A party in progress

Welcome to the rural channel, where you always have neighbours, after a fashion. I’m unpacking the car, and somewheres off to the left, a party is in progress. Not the kind I’m accustomed to; here the language consists of yips and yowls, punctuated by shork barks. Be they red, or be they grey… I won’t be sure until I see their play.

The windows are dark

This has turned out to be a very long day. Too much to do, on someone else’s timetable. Now to ignore the myriad ache points and try something civilized: sleeping.

Alone on a bridge

Based on what I’ve absorbed from cinema, getting from there to here should require nothing more than a wiggle of the nose, or a snap of the fingers, or perhaps a wayward wand whatever. On a low budget shoot, a card showing “one thousand miles later”. In my life, the transportation requires hours and hours, seated in the same position, trying not to snore (I fail, apparently).

Maintenance mode

Taking care of this blog is usually maintenance-free, other than infrequent tweaks to plugins. But… when things go wrong, for whatever reason, some serious concentration is required.

A real first night

An exciting day, here. We spent our first night in the new house, getting used to the different sights and sounds. Quiet, except for the intermittent sump pump; when you’ve spent thirty years without one, it has novelty value. When you need one, it must be one of the world’s more satisfying sounds.

Frost to fog to rain

Despite the frost and the fog and the rain, we played the travel game today. The night was restless, so before 05h00, the car met the road. We watched the sun rise, and disappear – into dense, nacreous vapours that caused everything to vanish, beyond our moving bubble.

Packed for emergencies

Worms, beware. The first robin of the year is afoot.

There are only two ways to receive a delivery at your door. Either you sleep in, and miss the low flying run-by completely… or you get up bright and early, and then wait for the whole day for the truck to park at the end of the drive. I chose the latter.
