Maintenance mode

posted in travel |

Taking care of this blog is usually maintenance-free, other than infrequent tweaks to plugins. But… when things go wrong, for whatever reason, some serious concentration is required.

The hosting firm shut the gates, yesterday, when their monitoring software noted some irregular software. Nothing I had done, and not even this blog; some old installations used while teaching had been subverted. I was left with close to three hundred files to erase, via ftp. And since I’m away from base, my only access was via a tablet connected to a smartphone hotspot. For the record, I hope to never pass this way again.

This was delivery day at the house. New appliances; a comfortable couch. And a meeting with the window dressing lady, to choose how much or little we will reveal to passersby. The morning passed quickly, as preparations were laid on – cardboard for the floor. The truck didn’t sink too deeply into the mire, and the delivery team were very attentive to the doors they passed through. New house smell has that effect on some.

I was keen to get some of the installation out of the way, and settled for hooking up the dishwasher. No power cord provided, so I purchased an extension cord at the hardware store, and surgically altered it to my needs. No sense in “running” an empty machine, but my brief hydrostat test passed without incident.

After a walkthrough with the camera and fisheye lens, we made it out for a meal. And so passed another day. Time to watch the sun set.
