Filled with anticipation

Just for the record: I am a Canadian. That means that in the month of January, the need to sit and wait for the snow to start falling is rational. Particularly when the forecast is that there will be a gazillion of them, or at least enough to cover the neighbourhood with up to twenty-five centimeters worth, measured vertically. Followed, or in concert with, winds gusting to seventy kph. No, I’m not going to translate. If my hopes (wishes and dreams) are met, tomorrow will be a white world, and my employer will encourage me to stay inside in safety. Storm warning; almost as good as the real thing.

Unexpectedly closed

Trepidation with a pinch of anticipation; my reaction to a forecast of freezing rain. After that debacle in the western portion of the province some years back, the idea of ice on vertical surfaces is not something I take lightly. Instead, I sleep lightly, ready to jump from my bed to do battle. Or something. How do you defend your world against something as heavy of consequence.

Blinded by the light

A new way to describe “How cold is it”… how about “Too cold to heat the car”. Odd juxtaposition of terms, but after today I’m satisfied that it’s a valid metaphor. I had great plans. Go out, buy some coffee, come home. I made it around the block. Blinded by the light.

Tinned cake as an impulsive purchase

If you live in Canada, you have to accept temperature range. +30C to -30C accounts for our view of the world; either we’re sweating or shivering. Both at once is a sign of a fever, and that has nothing to do with national identity. Go ahead, ask your physician. Today, things are running cold. How cold? When I filled the green bin with the content destined for the blue bin, it was because I couldn’t see the difference. Eyes frozen shut, etc. And it was too cold to rectify the situation. Tomorrow, the city burns a bit more paper than usual.

Updates by approximation

Two hours now. I’ve been sitting in front of a screen, trying to get past the hurdle of system updates. Two machines, which means twice the fun.

Minimal effort applied

Just over a day since my last flu shot, and I’m still healthy. Let’s give two thumbs up to the advances in medical procedures, shall we. After the crazy circus over the last two calendar rounds (hundreds in a shopping centre), the health services moved the show to an obscure hospital basement. Unless you knew the location, there was no danger of puncture wounds. Almost like a secret club, what. Me and a bunch of more senior citizens, politely sitting for our fifteen minutes of R&R after the deed.

Removing the random from the household soundtrack

As charming as it might be in nature, running water in the house just gets on the nerves. Particularly, when the sound is 24/7 from a toilet. No relaxed spirits here; we’ve been awake at night, and the sub voce about “how come nobody can find a hardware store” has soured family moments. Tonight my excuse list ran out, and so did I. The toilet has been repaired, for a little less than $4 and a few minutes of “arm up to the elbow in cold and wet”.

First wind and then water

Now that the storm has passed, we’re getting images of how things went elsewhere. Not far from here, though. This is a local story.

Hail to the hail

I stand amazed. We had hail just now, big as jelly beans. I haven’t seen that stuff in years!

Wouldn’t have been important, except that son #3 needed to report to the dojo. At the moment I opened the door, the precipitation became a tactile affair. Bravely, I pushed the remote door unlock, and ran… to the locked door. Weak battery moment, I expect. No real pain, but the next time I catch a news bulletin vaunting the virtues of pingpong sized objects falling from the firmament, I’ll breathe another sigh of relief. It could have been worse.

Maybe it’s time to have a plan

Maybe I should pay more attention to the weather channel. After all, we live in dangerous times.

Last evening, the city of Springfield, MA had a visit from a tornado. Not exactly Tornado Alley. The video on YouTube was an eye-opener for me… forming over water, crossing the river, etc. The things I’d always believed would keep me safe from twirling winds. You see, at about the same time, we were caught up in some gusty weather, right here. And the weather channel was showing a red alert, reporting “that rotation has been observed in storm clouds, which may lead to the formation of tornados”. Right here.
