A word of advice: if you haven’t tried that mayo and Parmesan recipe that is showing on TV, do so. Really good, and the prep time (under five minutes for setup, plus an hour in the oven) works well when your cooking schedule is scrunched on both ends. This one, I’ll do again.

I’m backed into a corner. My weather station and my telephone can’t communicate, even though I’ve checked my server and tested my uploads. A lot of “my” in there, for very little in return.

Certain of my ancestors are probably shaking their heads, sadly.
I decided to go fishing, for supper. Over to Provigo Pond, where my virtual line was able to catch a feed of pan-ready cod and sole. A choice on the menu, if you will. Didn’t need my boots, or a sou’wester. In counterpoint, I did help a real fisher, somewhere, to earn a living. That’s a positive thing.

My technique has been tested over a period of years. Before the weather gets chilly, make a big batch of chili. There. Make a bumper sticker, if you want.

Sitting, watching something involving Rick Mercer, in a hamster ball, at Horseshoe Valley. And the memories come flooding back.

Consider this as an appeal to all those TV cooking hosts, who make things that are delicious, timely and photogenic. Please, could you fail once in a while? Just for the rest of us, who can’t keep up.

Given the auspicious date (a nod to my ancestors), I tried to celebrate with a traditional menu today. Unfortunately, we’re due for groceries, so the only option available would have been green eggs and ham. The work of Dr Seuss is important, especially if you raise progeny, but not particularly suited to a Celtic menu. I demurred.

Time to dig out the cookbook that deals with odd ingredients. As part of the loyalty program at my local supermarket, we get free stuff. Not much, not really things of value. More a case of what is overstocked. Like the week they gave us pomegranates. This time around: broccoli.

Flavour takes time. Ask my co-cook. We’re six weeks past the holidays, and the slow cooker is starting to play a regular role in diet around here. Not that we lack time, but we often arrive home just before the “proper” meal time. Now that a meal can be set up and left to simmer for the day, we’re back to full plates of food. That’s good. So’s the food.
