Skunked by the imaginary hare

Maybe I’m a victim of folklore, or having forgotten to shop before the deadline. Whichever; the house was without any trace of holiday candy this morning. No oddly shaped rabbits made of chocolaty (not a spelling error). No coloured eggs filled with traces of marshmallow (and peanuts). Not even a slab of decorative toffee. Skunked, by the hare. Unless we hit the shops, tomorrow, this will go down in family history as the candy holiday that wasn’t.

Adapting to a local market

My food menu is entirely dependent on my local market. Probably a stock statement, no matter where you live. Anyhow, I went off to “hunt”, in anticipation of the holiday closure, and landed back with a huge ham. Size of a half-watermelon. Now I have to figure out if it still requires an oven session; if so, for how long, and with what spices. Adventure, by any measure.

Preparing to prepare food

I wonder how long a store needs to “get” more inventory? My quick trip to add LED bulbs to the pile of material for the new house led nowhere (sorry, but the only word that fit the situation rhymed with red, or bed, or fed…). I did find the replacement electrical switches I need here (and now), so it wasn’t a wasted outing.

Slow cooked quality

Faced with a request for something different on the menu, I decided to go with a standard. Ribs. No matter that it takes a whole afternoon to do the job properly; that’s what I had available on the timeline. I decided to go outside my comfort zone and purchase the meat from a local butcher shop. Bit more expensive, balanced by much better quality. Home to heat the oven and then let the combination of low heat and slow time work the magic. It did.

Do you see what I see?

Another cold winter day. Or, how I spent hours warming a chair in a waiting area. Mix and match.

Yesterday, the “clinic” called; a chance to fit me in with the specialist. In a world of socialized medicine (as in, I don’t really know how much it actually costs), there’s no thought of refusing such an offer. I arose with the sun, prepared myself mentally and physically, and then made my way to the frigid bus stop. Just like the good old days.

Frozen meals at the right time and price

It’s a given; you can produce most meals, in your own kitchen, for less than the retail price point. Most homebodies work for slave pay rates, after all. However, I’m willing to admit when I find a deal on something. I’m willing to buy that deal if there are enough nickels left in the back pocket. Today’s mention: frozen lasagna, big enough for three, for a penny under six dollars. No need to thaw first. The oven will do the dirty.

Too many just in time packages

I’ve been given an ultimatum by the rest of the family: check the date. In one particular domain, my trust of the system has sold me short. The foods I purchase seem to be landing on or after that “best before” limitation.

Calculating the relative loaf value

Who knew that a soft football could garner so much attention? Happened across a press conference, on CNN; in a world where so many things are wrong, a full fifteen was devoted to finding out how many ways a really well paid coach could say he knew nothing about how almost all of those balls lost air. I missed the second act, where the quarterback said the same thing. Now I’m pumped for part three.

Mics in unison

One more reason (for me) to avoid upgrading to Win8: sound drivers. Put part of the afternoon towards hooking up a headset with microphone on a nondescript Dell. Should have been Plug and Play. Instead, feast or famine. The earphones work well, but the mic is either silent or in full unison. You know; the built-in mic along with the headset. Not what I want. somethng to approach, tomorrow.
