A new gold standard

One day later: still haven’t watched (or found) the “super ads”. There was one opportunity to get the whole show, but I know how the game ended. Experience trumps bravado, or something like that.

Planning for a green future

What if our lives are really just the video for an endless playlist of mediocre songs? This morning, I had the idea that I could head to the city, get some things done and be home in time for an early supper. And then, a song: “Should I stay or should I go?”

In lieu of travel

Had to use today to visualize a week without transportation. With other family planning to travel, after second-guessing the weather for the next few days, I had to make sure that there was sufficient food on hand to get through the “no car” period. I’ve done this before, just not recently. With three decades of a market within jogging distance, I’d lost good habits. Time to regain control.

Like a cloak of invisibility

This time, the forecast was accurate. Snow started falling around daybreak, and as I write, things continue. Calmly. This is a fine powder; exactly what a skier might wish for. I’m a flatlander, so I’ll never know more. Instead, we waited until after lunch, and made a short trip to the beach.

All is calm

A familiar melody, with familiar words. The third line, in particular, seems pertinent: “All is calm”. That’s the summation of life in the country. Just a year ago, we were still in the metropolitan mode, with the clan assembled in the common area. This time around, fewer of “the team” are present, but we hold to the same fundamentals.

Prep time versus eat time

The mathematics of food preparation are skewed. Think about it. Other than a bowl of cereal, where the pour time is much shorter than the spoon it down time, most meals require a larger effort in preparation than the actual meal merits.

The flavour I didn’t try

Over the summer months, one of the larger potato chip companies had a test market thing going on. I tried a couple of flavours; catchy ones. “Smoked Meat Sandwich”. “Baked Beans”. Not your usual salt and vinegar standards. Today, the winning entry came up on Twitter, and I realized that, as usual, I missed out. I’ll now be left with no idea what “PEI Scalloped Potato” chips actually taste like. Story of my life.

Where would you prefer to live?

This goes beyond simple compare and contrast. At home, the only unexpected “noise” comes from the local ukulele practice group. Nothing dangerous, or over the top. Turn on the TV, and we learn that Paris is essentially a war zone this evening. Dozens dead. Continuing explosions. Chaos.

Keep it low and slow

Call it anticipation. Sounds better than insomnia, right? In any case, I had some serious cooking to do, and I had to get the logistics clear before putting anything to heat.

The dog on a road trip

I didn’t even have to give a reason. As soon as the dog heard “Let’s go for a ride in the car”, he was in favour. Completely. A chance to wear his cool safety harness, and have the whole back seat and two side windows to himself; canine paradise.
