Total acquittal

Seemed like a great idea, to me. Skip that whole cooking process and find a nearby restaurant. Supper, at someone else’s expense (not exactly). Not to be; we’re on the cusp of a long weekend, and the nearby restaurant started their time away from the kitchen early this afternoon. I had no choice but to pick up my big knife and chop chicken and bell peppers. Fajita night, in spite.

From now on, set aside the mask

The pre-snowstorm storm, this morning, was unexpected. As was the klaxon of a large truck, reversing into our laneway. I don’t pretend to understand the forecasting behind “automated fuel delivery”; nor does the propane seller. We took a charge of 40 litres, due in large part to infrequent use of the standby generator.

The incomplete ring experience

There has to be a special place in the netherworld for people that call my phone before sunrise, and then hang up just as I make it to the receiver. No callback implied or received. I came out of a sound sleep, scrambled to get there… you can guess the rest.

The show of shows

At some point, it was decided that there would be an unofficial national holiday. The purpose, to distract the people of the world with a really big show, and sell lots of high calorie foods and simply take a break from winter (in the Northern hemisphere, but the south could join in, quietly). And for those who pretend to watch sports, but only once a year, there would be a football game, because… well, because.

A move from luxury to welcome

This morning marked the first “real” snowfall since the start of the season. When that snowblowing behemoth turned into the driveway, somewhere before coffee time, the contracted service moved from luxury to downright welcome. If I’d had to face clearing a path with my trusted manual shovel, I might not have had the same sense of seasonal pleasure.

Tablet beatbox test

Playing loose with the clock: when I look at the time and realize I must be somewhere else for a meeting within twenty-five minutes. Three decades of good habits, slowly eroding. Yes, I was on time, but the move away from an alarm-controlled lifestyle means that I will, eventually, be late for something.

Behind each title, a monolithic mystery

Should I handle this as a mathematical question, or be more existential? Let’s see: 125 ml of solution, absorbed by a porous surface of 0.8 sq.m (it does give me a number, but devoid of significance.) Try the other way: wood, lightly rubbed with an oil (it does provide me with a sense of enriched colour). Not sure…

Rich, famous, infamous or destitute

What a day it has been. Consider a ride on a merry-go-round, or a roller coaster, or one of those combo affairs: a Tilt-a-Whirl? Not sure, but one of those contraptions that causes dizziness. Today was binge day, for the final season of Downton Abbey. A sixth season, where my hopes of having the servants assist in the dressing for dinner never faltered.

Where would you prefer to live?

This goes beyond simple compare and contrast. At home, the only unexpected “noise” comes from the local ukulele practice group. Nothing dangerous, or over the top. Turn on the TV, and we learn that Paris is essentially a war zone this evening. Dozens dead. Continuing explosions. Chaos.

Remember that line about “It’s like a train wreck; you can’t look away”? In real life, a certain TV channel can’t…
