They can’t look away

posted in media |

Remember that line about “It’s like a train wreck; you can’t look away”? In real life, a certain TV channel can’t…

I’m referring to Chronically Neurotic News, out of Atlanta and other virtual points. Seriously, when they get the bit of a story between their jaws, we’re in for the long haul.

Sorry, but I couldn’t resist. All day, the talking heads have been taking the slimmest of story lines (involving an actual derailment on the outskirts of a major city in PA) and examined it from every possible angle. Meanwhile, the rest of the planet is placed in a holding pattern. No new news unless something even bigger comes into view. The “you can’t look away” model of journalism.

In a truly symbolic break with the past, my wetsuit is gone. Common sense, really. I haven’t been able to don the thing for decades. It must have shrunk.

A phone call was made, this afternoon. The mover has received a cordial invitation to drop by and make an educated guess about just how much stuff we have on hand, ready for loading. Now, he (a guess about gender) hasn’t come over, but the intention is firm. We want to move to the next level.

Funny thing. I’ve not seen any disequilibrium in the universe, now that there are no Canadian teams remaining in the race for glory (pro hockey). Turns out that the Cup hasn’t stayed over for the summer, since ’93. And yet, life continues.

This city is ready for the summer obstacle course. Road construction. Whole road bridges, demolished and replaced while we’re not paying attention. Just public funds.
