I have found a very straightforward approach to my life: I do things by the numbers. Unlike when I was getting started, and doing something that involved counting the years (like school), I now count the days. The figures feel larger, and it reminds me to keep at it. You know, because I will eventually run out of days to count. Here, let me show you.

Funny, the things that catch my attention. Last evening, in the midst of minor wifi issues (pretty much every day around here), I spotted an “alien”. That is, another SSID in my list of available networks. Now, I live far enough away from others that the term alien is justified. And so, I did some simple detective work.

Having spent more of my life in libraries than many (OK,
more than I like to admit), I have nothing but respect for systems. Of
classification, I mean. Don’t ask me to do battle on the side of Dewey or LOC.
They both work. However, someone posted a photo on social media this morning
that I found aberrant. As in “wrong, from the get-go”. In the photo, the books
were arranged by colours on the spines. Not labels; the actual publisher
palette. So unwieldy, on so many levels. In passing, I am “colour blind”, so
the idea of separating my books into reds, greens, blues, etc. has never
crossed my mind. And yes, when restricted by shelf height, I have arranged
books into the places they would fit. I’ve even placed some on their sides
(sleepy books!). But not once did I arrange books by colour.

The afternoon is gone. I’ve been down a deep hole of nostalgia, with a stream of the Cowboys Fringants playing in the background. Lots of songs that I recognize, albeit “don’t ask me to translate”; too many words. Good stuff.

Having read a certain number of books along the way, I do realize that books aren’t harvested in a literary vineyard. There are companies that take care of the details, and then they sell the product to a bookstore or a library near you. Or to Amazon. Like I say, I’ve got the system figured out.

At some point, I may have to get into a comfortable position and watch a lot of old movies. Specifically, something about Star Wars. Yes, I am aware of the basic premise, but due to my exiting the world of popular culture for a very long time, I haven’t seen all the movies. Haven’t really seen any of them, actually.

For close to three decades, I took pride in my small but growing library. Went beyond the random piles on the floor and invested in some real shelving. At the end, I counted somewhere close to one hundred linear feet, attached to the walls and spaced according to my needs.

Looking back, school was surprisingly homogenous. On a day-to-day basis, ideological conflict was absent. We all went to the same classrooms, and herd mentality coupled with a singular curriculum meant that a differing opinion on anything was beyond rare.

As I continue my studies in a foreign language, I’ve noticed something. Improved comprehension. Not me; that’s for another day, but the dog. He seems to understand things better than at any previous time.

I think that I need to learn how to make my own bagels. Not authentic; I don’t intend to install a wood fired oven in the back yard. However, there has to be something better than a) trips to the big city or b) tolerating the ersatz rounds of bread sold locally. Not good, for anything. Even frozen and thawed doesn’t make a pig’s ear into a fancy handbag.
