An unwieldy arrangement
Having spent more of my life in libraries than many (OK, more than I like to admit), I have nothing but respect for systems. Of classification, I mean. Don’t ask me to do battle on the side of Dewey or LOC. They both work. However, someone posted a photo on social media this morning that I found aberrant. As in “wrong, from the get-go”. In the photo, the books were arranged by colours on the spines. Not labels; the actual publisher palette. So unwieldy, on so many levels. In passing, I am “colour blind”, so the idea of separating my books into reds, greens, blues, etc. has never crossed my mind. And yes, when restricted by shelf height, I have arranged books into the places they would fit. I’ve even placed some on their sides (sleepy books!). But not once did I arrange books by colour.
Actually, right now we’re having shelves built in the basement, but I think they will be used to hold other stuff. I’m a firm believer in ebooks, and a simple hard drive is sufficient for a library of many thousands of books, most unread. That, too, is not an issue. After all, I intend to live for a very long time, in keeping with my healthy lifestyle and inherited genes, (and my personal expectations). Bedtime reading is a good way to take the edge of a stressful day. And if I spend too long in bed, I’ll have lots to read. Battery life might be a factor.
And as for those other books, still in cartons, don’t worry. I intend to find good homes for all of them.
