Determined to go. Somewhere. Anywhere.

If I had one word to give the people at Apple, it would be “incrementalize”. No need to be precise in mmy definition; I’ll use the anecdote to make my point.

Progressing with harmony

At one early point in my advanced academic studies, I tried to learn the basics of musical harmony. The bane of my early mornings, seated in a small classroom, with a piece of notation paper, while someone that actually understood the science was attempting to make it clear and simple. It wasn’t, largely because the mind of an eighteen year old boy is wired to respond to almost anything else. I passed the course. Sufficient to say, my earned credit was used only to complete an academic requirement. I promised to get out of Dodge, in return for that wink and a nod.

Fixed floors

When all else fails (actually, when anything fails), I have some sound advice. Call the people that know what they are doing. Our house is quickly returning to its normal temperature level, and I could have wandered around for days doing what comes “naturally”. That is, pressing on the thermostat controls and wishing mightily.

If only I had thought this through

When I was much younger, I believed that cleaning up my room entailed packing stuff into a smaller space, closing the door and assuming an air of “look how well I did, Mom”. Unfortunately, I don’t seem to have moved beyond that model of restoring order to things.

A ladder that does everything!

As the renos move up the stairwell, I’ve developed a fascination with the ladder. Not a step ladder, per se; more of a pretzel that can be reconfigured in many forms. It permits access to the far reaches of the stairwell, as long as you have a team of pretzel-benders. Two of us, minimum. I like adaptable technology. Can’t justify owning one, yet, but it seems so practical. Here’s a picture.

Operation window open/close

If only the sounds were more predictable. This afternoon, with the temperature just below freezing, and the house very quiet, I could hear little pops and clicks from the attic. Pops, mainly. As if nails were being unseated in the shingles. And it worries me, even if there’s no real need. Please, roof, stay in one place.

No need to chisel things out

Try to remember this one simple rule: media, any media, is just a file. This afternoon, I was forwarded a short audio clip. Old content. But, important (son #3 singing, back when school was still a thing). Now, the content came as a short message, and it turns out that with the right instructions, getting things into a storeable file format was really easy. No need to dig out the tape recorder and a microphone. Just click/save/rejoice. Oh, son #3, we will never forget (or let you forget).

Avoiding the risk of trivia

The new GPS is very good at determining where we are. And, not so good at displaying the details. I plugged the gadget into the computer, for initial firmware updates. Based on the software, it will require a minimum of nine hours to catch up on the world (as we know it). How much can things have changed since the device was created, earlier in this decade? I’m looking forward to seeing what is new.

The latest kludge for audio

A couple of weeks ago (time goes by FAST), I mentioned that I had hit start on the driver permit renewal process. The non-contact, non-visit version; new to me. And today, in closure, I received that coveted little piece of plastic with my old photo. It worked! No more though required, for a full five years. Hey, by then, we could have flying vehicles and internet that actually reaches a measurable speed!
