Progressing with harmony

posted in music, technology |

At one early point in my advanced academic studies, I tried to learn the basics of musical harmony. The bane of my early mornings, seated in a small classroom, with a piece of notation paper, while someone that actually understood the science was attempting to make it clear and simple. It wasn’t, largely because the mind of an eighteen year old boy is wired to respond to almost anything else. I passed the course. Sufficient to say, my earned credit was used only to complete an academic requirement. I promised to get out of Dodge, in return for that wink and a nod.

Now, you can’t escape from the laws of harmony, if you ever get involved in musical performance with others. Or at least, I hope you can’t. We have had one Ono in recent history. By accident, I watched a video on modulation, this evening. Here we are, a half-century later, and I understood the presentation. Not to be confused with understanding the subject matter; that would be too much. But I can sit back and accept that my morning sessions, long ago, had some value.

On my list of new things to learn, this evening, I’m going to try to enter a series of waypoints into a handheld GPS. Not sure where to start, but I have the unit, and some related software, and the rationale is clear. Perhaps I will come away with (again) a basic understanding; enough to convert the coordinates received from someone else and then set up a procedure to do this, again, some other time. The value of self-paced learning.
