Operation window open/close

posted in education, technology |

If only the sounds were more predictable. This afternoon, with the temperature just below freezing, and the house very quiet, I could hear little pops and clicks from the attic. Pops, mainly. As if nails were being unseated in the shingles. And it worries me, even if there’s no real need. Please, roof, stay in one place.

My original belief was that this house was silent. After all, the infloor heating removes fan noise, and the dog tries to sleep for long stretches of time. However… the circulating pumps are busy little critters, and if you stay very still, you can pick up on their activity. Leaves me to wonder if (and when) I begin to record the sounds I want, will the sounds I don’t be a pernicious feature. We shall see (hear?), I guess.

Woe be the rule makers. In schools, right now, suitable air flow is important. In one BC community, the teachers compensated for lacks in ventilation by opening the windows. Makes sense. And as a counter measure, the administration screwed the windows closed. Makes no sense. The school board (hands off, always) had sent in a general contractor, so no screwdrivers were actually in the hands of the unqualified, but the students and teachers will have to adapt (and endure). In the school system, structural repairs will be scheduled at a future time (always), unless there is immediate danger (or a school administrator has wishes. Oh, for the autonomy available in the good old days, when the classroom teacher was qualified to operate the windows.
