Pay less and hear less

posted in technology |

I the absence of two things (need and money). I can afford to peruse the comments on various items available for sale on Amazon. $US and $CDN confused.

There are subtle differences between the two groups. I’ll not try to determine the “why”, but the various reviews from the north seem to be… more polite. Does paying the premium forced by exchange rates inhibit the tone of the comments? Maybe.

Anyhow, today I happened upon budget microphones as a product category. Remember, in the absence of a need, you can still pretend to search, and when you come up against a review that seems cruel, you haven’t spent anything other than time. Right now, I have lots of time. So, where were we? Oh, yes, microphones. There really is a wide range of product out there, and you can spend anywhere from the price of a big lunch at Mickey-D all the way up to a down payment on a small car. And this, through Amazon. Get into the shady trade practices of specialized dealers and it gets much worse, quickly.

The sweet spot for the cheap end involves nameless companies out of the far East. As does the high end, but we’re not supposed to catch that detail. German engineering? That’s so last century. Now that there is a steady conduit of containers on ships (discounting those that get grounded in a certain canal), the flow of product from factories too large to imagine is a foundation of the industry. Here, let me interest you in a brand new Neewer NW-700. Any cheaper and it would qualify as a giveaway.
